New Findings from Midwest Study on Transitioning Out of Foster Care into Adulthood: Outcomes at Ages 23 and 24
The Midwest Study provides a comprehensive picture of how foster youth are faring during this transition since the Foster Care Independence Act of 1999 became law. Young people who age out of foster care continue to face major challenges in their early twenties, often unable to complete their educations and find housing and jobs. These new findings look at the outcomes at ages 23 and 24.

This brief discusses the critical role the State legislators play in supporting greater stability for child welfare agency leadership and the importance of Child and Family Services Reviews (CFSRs) as a tool for legislators in assessing child welfare system performance. It also describes the role of legislator-agency collaboration in bringing about system improvement through the CFSR process. The brief was produced for the Children’s Bureau by the technical assistance (TA) to State legislators on the CFSRs project component, managed by JBS International, Inc., with support from project subcontractor the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).

The CME Society will be unable to provide the Early Academic Planning Camp this Summer 2010, due to funding constraints facing their sponsors. Many youth supporters and colleagues have already contacted their office regarding the application for the camp. The CME Society appreciate their support and deeply regret they will not be able to invite youth to their campus this summer.

It is unfortunate that this opportunity for foster youth in California, has been canceled, but they would like to encourage youth to seek out the pre college programs in their local county community colleges and universities, such as Upward Bound, GEAR Up and other pre-college experiences being held at CSUs and UC schools. Although their Early Academic Planning Camp program was tailored to work with foster youth, these other programs will be a great opportunity for foster youth in their county who are interested in pursuing higher education.

Hopefully they can bring it back in future summers.
