HEY joined social welfare professionals, educators, and others who work closely with local foster care youth as they celebrated resiliency in San Francisco’s current and former foster youth. Youth in foster care face incredible challenges and need the support of friends, family, and the community.  This year HEY honored 29 current and former foster youth!

Leadership Awards Night Honorees!

All sorts of community supporters came out—from CYC, ILSP and SF Children and Family Services.

They also got a chance to thank people in the audience that are important to them!

Steven and Erika, EYAB 2008 members, pass out T-Shirts to all the Honorees for the upcoming Voices of Foster Youth 2008 event.

Kordnie was a former HEY EYAB and now gets to honor a new generation of foster youth leaders.

In celebration of National Foster Care Month, Honoring Emancipated Youth joined over 250 community members and youth together (HEY) for a very special breakfast  that honoredthose who are making a positive change for current and former foster care youth.  HEY’s EYAB honored four organizations that had made a commitment to current and former foster youth. 

Organizations Honored:

  • First Place for Youth – Housing
  • City College Guardian Scholars Program –Education
  • BAYCAT – Employment
  • Mental Health Association of San Francisco – Health

Our EYAB members were ambassadors, explaining the event, showing people to their seats and having a great time.

HEY had almost 250 people come to the Breakfast this year. HEY rocked the house!

The EYAB team elegantly mingled with the foster care community.

Gensler donated some great design and signs for the event.

HEY’s Board Chair, Andrew Nikklaus, introduced the Hey Breakfast (and on time too!).

HEY’s Executive Director, Sara Razavi, talked about HEY’s mission and values.

What a beautiful spread, and the Palace Hotel was fabulous!

The EYAB got a chance to talk to other foster youth about their potential to get involved with advocacy.

Sara, the ED was a great host!

Chio, an EYAB member, presented the first Award to First Place for Youth, where he also works and volunteers.

Sam Cobbs represented First Place for Youth and accepted the award.

Erin, an EYAB member, presented an award to City College, Guardian Scholars, who have helped her attain her dreams of attending higher education.

Erika presented an award to Mental Health Association of San Francisco where she volunteers.

Steven presented an award to BAYCAT, who helps youth in his former neighborhood, the Bayview.

New friends and old friends all came together to support current and former foster youth!

Kordnie, a former EYAB, concluded the morning with a call for continued support of HEY.

May is National Foster Care Month, and to celebrate, HEY held “Voices Of Foster Youth 2008” a day of FREE carnival fun including games, prizes, music, food and of course, community and job resources! Voices of Foster Youth 2008 was and always is a FREE annual event which has become a keystone in the Bay Area National Foster Care Month celebrations. FREE Food, Games, Resources, Music (featuring KMEL), & entertainment featuring our talented local foster youth!

Voices of Foster Youth 2008 was a collaboration of the following organizations:

  • Honoring Emancipated Youth (HEY)
  • San Francisco Independent Living Skills Program (SFILSP)
  • San Francisco Human Services Agency (SFHSA)
  • California Youth Connection (CYC)
  • JVS
  • City Youth Now
  • City College of San Francisco Guardian Scholars
  • First Place for Youth
  • SFUSD Foster Youth Services

This year over 300 youth and community members and over 30 organizations participated.  It was our largest event ever!

Every person that volunteered or participated got a FREE T-Shirt. ILSP totally ran the T-Shirt show!

Not only did the youth show up to have fun, they worked too!

Everyone got a chance to sign up to vote. Are you registered yet?

KMEL was in the house!

The little ones got their faces painted.

826 Valencia showed up to talk about creative writing and tutoring.

The HEY EYAB booth had prizes, games and talked about foster youth advocacy and the importance of getting involved and speaking out.

Our lovely MC and former foster youth ran the show, the raffles and dance contests.

CCY showed their support and talked about youth policy advocacy.

First Place brought a ton of youth, volunteers and prize-winners.

Voices of Youth 2008 was the biggest event we have ever had. We had over 300 participants and more than 30 organizations represented!

The CASAs came and played games and talked to youth about their services.

The HEY staff even had a good time!
