SAVE the DATE for HEY’s Foster Care Month Celebration
National Foster Care Month is here please be sure to mark your calendars for the following HEY organized event:

*Saturday, May 12
4th Annual Voices of Youth 2007: Success through Empowerment, a community carnival and celebration honoring foster youth and their families. There will be free food, community resources, music, and games! Location: San Francisco, Justin Hermann Plaza (near Embarcadero BART) Time: 12:00 until 4:00 Cost: Free

I just wanted to send a quick thank you to all for your work and support for and at the annual HEY Foster Youth Connections Breakfast that took place on May 1st .  A special thanks to Sophie Maxwell for her constant “fussin and cussin” to raise awareness around issues directly affecting foster youth.  To Dylan and Lanette, our EYAB  speakers, you truly inspire us all.  To HEY board members and United Way staff thanks for your tireless support during HEY’s busiest time of the year. 

Thanks to all that donated and attended this event.  Everything went so smoothly and quite frankly I had a great time!!

3. 4th Annual “Voices of Youth 2007:  Success through Empowerment”

On Saturday, May 12th, 2007 Honoring Emancipated Youth
(HEY), a community project of United Way of the Bay Area, and HEY partners will honor current and former foster youth and their families at the 4th Annual San Francisco Foster Care Month Celebration: “Voices of Youth 2007: Success through Empowerment”.  This free annual event has become a keystone in the Bay Area National Foster Care Month celebrations. We will highlight the stories of foster youth who have achieved successes in the fields of: Education, Housing, Employment, and Health.

Date:  Saturday, May 12th, 2007
Time:  12:00-4:00pm
Place:  Justin Herman Plaza

4. Early Academic Planning Camp for 8th graders at SJSU

CALL FOR YOUR HELP TO RECRUIT YOUTH!

The CME Society@ San Jose State would like to enlist your help in recruiting youth for our EARLY ACADEMIC PLANNING CAMP, which will be held June 8-11th.  We need more applications and would very much like to offer this opportunity to 30 foster youth.  Please help us by sending this email to your Social Services CASAs, Foster Parents and Foster Care contacts who have youth in middle school who are in the 8th grade.   (We will consider those starting 8th grade or starting 9th grade in the fall.)  

We have extended the deadline until next week, or as soon as we can get a commitment of numbers up to 30.

If you have any questions regarding the program, please feel free to contact Connie Hernandez Robbins at 408-924-1089.  The application is online.

5. New SF Youth Health Service and Referral Cards

The updated version of the San Francisco Youth Health Service and Referral Card is now available at the Adolescent Health Working Group office (1390 Market Street, Suite 900, SF)!  Please check out the electronic version of the card.

The updated card includes:
-Contact information and office hours for SF health clinics that serve youth and young adults
-Contact information for all current SF Wellness Centers
-Hotline and talkline phone numbers

Please contact the Adolescent Health Working Group at 415-554-8429 to let us know how many cards your organization would like.  There is a maximum of 300 cards per organization/Wellness Center at this time.

The San Francisco Youth Health Service and Referrals Card and the California Minor Consent Laws Card can both be downloaded for free from their website.

6. Grants for Nursing Students from San Franciso Foundation

Through a grant from the San Francisco Foundation, the JVS Scholarship Committee awards grants to nursing students pursuing training or licensure.  The funds must be used to address significant financial hardships, such as tuition, books, supplies, board exam fees, or license fees.

To apply for the SFF grant client
-must be student pursuing a degree or licensure in nursing
-must be resident of Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, San Mateo, or Marin County
-must demonstrate financial need
-must address significant financial hardships 
-grant is limited to $1,000 each

About Honoring Emancipated Youth

HEY, a community project of United Way of the Bay Area, is a San
Francisco based intermediary organization providing leadership to the Bay Area foster care community. We advocate, raise public awareness, conduct issues research, convene stakeholders, identify trends and best practices, and facilitate innovative and comprehensive problem solving for local foster care community.
