2. 2nd HEY Training: Special Education and Prenatal Exposure

April 11, 2007, from 9:30-12:30 at SFILSP

Ken Simpson from San Francisco Human Services Agency will teach "Special Education and Prenatal Exposure" on Wed., April 11 from 9:30AM-12:30PM. This training will be at SF ILSP at 225 Valencia Street (@ Duboce St. Hourly parking is available but limited and 16th Street Bart Station is 10 minutes walk.

Through his work at the department Ken has extensive experience of the IEP process and is has created this workshop in response to a trend he has noticed in the field—a lot of youth are placed in special education (80%) due the birth affects from prenatal exposure.  Workshop participants will gain critical information on substance abuse and its effects on newborns.  Ken will make the correlation between the trends and how we as a community can betters support our youth.

3. Save the Dates—HEY’s Foster Month Celebration

National Foster Care Month (May) is right around the corner and you will soon receive more information on each of the following events, but in the meantime please be sure to mark your calendars for the following HEY organized events:

April 26th 2nd Annual Youth Leadership Awards coordinated by HEY and ILSP at 170 Otis Street, San Francisco 4:30-8 p.m.  For more information contact: Sara Razavi 415-808-4435 or srazavi@uwba.org.

May 1st 4th Annual HEY Foster Youth Connections Breakfast (previously known as HEY Job Shadow Day) to benefit Honoring Emancipated Youth (HEY) from 8 - 9 a.m. at San Francisco's Palace Hotel (2 Montgomery, San Francisco) followed by day of job shadowing by youth with community leaders. The job shadow experience runs from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. For more information contact: Sara at 415-808-4435 or emailsrazavi@uwba.org.

May 12th 4th Annual “Voices of Youth 2007: Success through Empowerment,” a community carnival and celebration honoring foster youth and their families. 4. Nominations for 2nd Annual Youth Leadership Award Due April 6, 2007

Any current or former foster youth (up to 25 years old) can be nominated for the Foster Care Month Youth Awards.  All those nominated will be honored!  We have two honorees categories: Youth (17 and under) and Young Adults (18-25).

This is an opportunity for youth and young adults to be a recognized with gifts and a reception event, on Thursday, April 26th 2007.

7. Maria Shriver's EITC Initiative at Laney College

On Thursday April 12th, from 11 AM to 4 PM, United Way of the Bay Area will co-host the final event of California's First Lady Maria Shriver's statewide tour to bring attention to the significant benefit which the Earned Income Tax Credit provides to low and moderate income families.

The day's activities will include free tax services, a resource fair populated by many of the community partners who have partnered with EKS for many years, and a series of mini financial seminars presented by some of EKS's financial partners.

8. Opportunity: Part-Time Clerk position at Lewis Feinberg Firm

Lewis Feinberg law firm in downtown Oakland is looking for a Part-Time File Clerk to work approximately 20 hours a week, preferably 4 hours a day but some other arrangement can be made. This position is perfect for a college student.   Duties include filing correspondence, retrieving files from the 10th floor, creating  file folders and redwells for documents, updating law books, aiding legal  assistants with pleadings  filing and doing other general office tasks as  assigned.   A general knowledge of office equipment, computers and word processing programs required.  Some college education preferred but not required.

9. First Place for Youth “STEP IT UP” Upcoming Orientations

Take your first steps to planning your future at First Place.  “Step It Up” is a two-week economic literacy class that prepares your for independent living.  Completion of the class is required to enter First Place’s Housing Programs.  All participants receive a $10/hour stipend for attendance and upt o $25 in public transportation assistance.

About Honoring Emancipated Youth

HEY, a community project of United Way of the Bay Area, is a San
Francisco based intermediary organization providing leadership to the Bay Area foster care community.
