1. Upcoming HEY Events

HEY's 2nd Training of the Year—will be April 11th from 9:30-12:30pm, at SF ILSP, 225 Valencia at Duboce, 10 minute walk from 16th Street BART.  Ken Simpson will teach "Special Education and Prenatal Exposure."

2. 2nd HEY Training: Special Education and Prenatal Exposure

Ken Simpson from San Francisco Human Services Agency will teach "Special Education and Prenatal Exposure" on Wed., April 11 from 9:30AM-12:30PM. This training will be at SF ILSP at 225 Valencia Street (@ Duboce St. Hourly parking is available but limited and 16th Street Bart Station is 10 minutes walk.

Through his work at the department Ken has extensive experience of the IEP process and is has created this workshop in response to a trend he has noticed in the field—a lot of youth are placed in special education (80%) due the birth affects from prenatal exposure.  Workshop participants will gain critical information on substance abuse and its effects on newborns. Ken will make the correlation between the trends and how we as a community can betters support our youth..

HEY’s Foster Month Celebration

National Foster Care Month (May) is right around the corner and you will soon receive more information on each of the following events, but in the meantime please be sure to mark your calendars for the following HEY organized events:

April 26th 2nd Annual Youth Leadership Awards coordinated by HEY and ILSP at 170 Otis Street, San Francisco 4:30-8 p.m.  For more information contact: Sara Razavi 415-808-4435 or srazavi@uwba.org.

May 1st 4th Annual HEY Foster Youth Connections Breakfast (previously known as HEY Job Shadow Day) to benefit Honoring Emancipated Youth (HEY) from 8 - 9 a.m. at San Francisco's Palace Hotel (2 Montgomery, San Francisco) followed by day of job shadowing by youth with community leaders. May 12th 4th Annual “Voices of Youth 2007: Success through Empowerment,” a community carnival and celebration honoring foster youth and their families. 4. Nominations for 2nd Annual Youth Leadership Award Due April 6, 2007

Any current or former foster youth (up to 25 years old) can be nominated for the Foster Care Month Youth Awards.  All those nominated will be honored!  We have two honorees categories: Youth (17 and under) and Young Adults (18-25).

This is an opportunity for youth and young adults to be a recognized with gifts and a reception event, on Thursday, April 26th 2007.

5. Opportunity: Orphan Foundation of America—Casey Family Scholars Program Deadline Is March 31, 2007

Orphan Foundation of America (OFA) in conjunction with Casey Family Programs and other generous sponsors offers approximately 100 new scholarships annually for young people out of foster care. These scholarships range in award amount from $2500 to $6000 and are renewable with continued eligibility for up to six years or until a student attains their Bachelors Degree or technical certificate/diploma, whichever comes first.

Applications will be accepted on line at www.orphan.org (click the yellow scholarship box on the home page) between now and March 31, 2007. Additional material as described in the application must be mailed to OFA at the address below with a postmark date of no later than April 16, 2007. Winners will be announced in early June, 2007 via email.

7. City College of San Francisco (CCSF) Guardian Scholar’s Summer Academy for 2007

In partnership with CCSF Guardian Scholars, CCSF AmeriCorps Program, SF Independent Living Skills Program, and SFUSD/SHPD Foster Youth Service Program, the Summer Academy offers high school juniors and seniors and CCSF entering freshman the opportunity to gain valuable tools for success and high school and college credits.  The program is designed to prepare foster youth students for a smooth transition from high school to college.  Students will receive free tuition, books, supplies, and off-campus tours.

9. First Place for Youth “STEP IT UP” Upcoming Orientations

Take your first steps to planning your future at First Place.  “Step It Up” is a two-week economic literacy class that prepares your for independent living.  Completion of the class is required to enter First Place’s Housing Programs.  All participants receive a $10/hour stipend for attendance and upt o $25 in public transportation assistance.

10. Wu Yee Children’s Services hosting a free Health and Safety Fair—April 21, 2007

Wu Yee Children's Services is holding a free Health and Safety Fair on Saturday, April 21, 2007 at the UCSF Mission Bay Conference Center as part of the Week of the Young Child.  The event is being coordinated through the Provider Services Department at Wu Yee and is open to all licensed and license-exempt providers and families.

Attached, please find a copy of the flyer and pre-registration form.  Participants may register for the morning conference or sign up for the full day CPR certification training which will be offered in English, Spanish and Cantonese.  The free Health and Safety Fair will follow the conference at 12pm and is open to all families with no registration required.

11. Save the Date! 2007 THP-Plus Institute

The California Department of Department of Social Services, the Corporation for Supportive Housing and the John Burton Foundation invite you to a full-day educational conference, the 2007 THP-Plus Institute:

Effective Practices to Successfully House Former Foster and Probation Youth.

The goal of the conference is to share effective practices with the many new THP-Plus practitioners that will be implementing programs in the 07-08 fiscal year as a result of the program's recently expanded state budget. Together, participants will learn from experienced
THP-Plus practitioners, youth participants, state administrators and housing experts.

Workshop Highlights
The conference will offer workshops on a wide range of topics, including:
*           fair housing issues
*           supporting parenting youth
*           effective property management strategies
*           managing roommate relationships
*           developing programs considerate of LGBTQ youth
*           THP-Plus administration

About Honoring Emancipated Youth

HEY, a community project of United Way of the Bay Area, is a San
