Shavonte Keaton

Greetings, My name is Shavonte’ Keaton and I was born in Atlanta, GA and raised there as well as in Rialto, CA. I am 23 years old and am a recent graduate of San Francisco State University with a BA in Psychology and a minor in Criminal Justice. As a former foster youth I plan on using my experiences and my love for helping others to have a career advocating and being the voice for those who may not always be able to speak for themselves. I am currently preparing to apply to law school to be a further voice of change for marginalized youth. I was in the foster care system for 5 years and during that time I met many youth like myself who were dissatisfied with the conditions of the system. It was through these conversations and interactions that I realized I had to use my voice to demand for change for youth who are experiencing what I experienced. I found out about EYAB from my previous job which is being the program assistant for the Guardian Scholars Program at SF State! I hope that being a part of EYAB will help me gain more experience and resources to help foster youth so that the foster care system will begin to attain a more positive connotation and that other youth will be inspired by my story. I firmly believe in the statement “you don’t have to become a product of your environment” and I plan to use my story to put a face to those words and help youth realize that too can be their reality.

Coming Soon – EYAB: Where Are They Now?

The current EYAB is in the process of creating a new section to be featured on the EYAB page on the new HEY website. EYAB members are currently in the process of interviewing past EYAB members and asking them a series of questions ranging from: what EYAB term did you serve, to where would you like to see the EYAB 5 years from now. This is the beginning of EYAB’s hope to start an alumni network for former EYAB members. Be on the lookout for the first round of EYAB “Where Are They Now” interviews to be added to the website within the next couple months!

$80 Million Dollars Cut From Child Welfare

From Shavonte Keaton, Program Assistant/ HEY Emancipated Youth Board Member
“The phrase “at risk” gets tossed around a lot by educators and social workers. Nowhere is the buzzword more applicable – and more poignant – than in its description of foster youth who are “aging out” of the system at age 18”. [1]
